Early Childhood Motivators

We’ve got to think in terms of families rather than parents because a lot of children are raised by other family members. We have to think about the family with the child all the time. There’s no such thing as an isolated child because as humans cannot survive alone. That’s not just our physical needs but our emotional needs, our intellectual needs. We need to be supported, scaffolded all the way, for a long time.

” Developmentally appropriate practices are ways of teaching that vary for or adapt to the age and experience of the individual learner. So fundamentally the definition has not changed. Instead, it has been expanded to include the fact that not only do you have to consider children as individuals, but you also have to consider children as members of groups with their own cultural identities.” (Brendekamp, 1998)

My Personal Web

My personal web is complied of  the people whom I love and care for deeply. Growing up as a child, in my family pictures were  rarely taken.  That is why it was so very important to me as a mother to capture all of my children’s precious moments on film.  I wish there was at least one photo of me to compare over the years, but It is most unfornate after searching every family album I own and contacting all of my siblings, I have no childhood pictures to share.

parents My Parents  Frank and Eldora were two of the most loving and supportive parents anychild could have asked for.  They always encourage me and my siblings to believe in ourselves, and to always do our personal best.  I came from a family of 12. Eight girls and two boys.  We were not rich monetarily, but we had a lot of love, along with everything we needed and a some of the things we wanted.

My fondest memories are the family outings we shared.  I remember my parents loading all of us into our rear seat station wagon to go to church on Sundays.  Many of those trips included my father taking us to his childhood home location, I use the word location because his home no longer existed; the area had been covered by the rising water.  I remebering listening to him talk about all the fond memories he had as he descibed in detail what his home was like.  I feel very blessed and fortune to have share 30 years with my mother and 36 years with my father before they both entered into eternal rest.

My Mother was a woman of many quotes:

  • Appreciate the little things in life and the bigger things will follow.
  • Always love and be true to yourself, then and only then, will you be able to love and be true to others.  This helped me to appreciate, that at the end of the day when all is said and done and there was no one else around, I still had to live with myself and the choices I make in life.
  • If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. “  This has helped me to hold true to my principles and values.
  • Mother, Father, Sister or Brother may have, but God blesses the child that has his/her own.”  This is always encouraging to me, helping me to continue to do and be my personal best.
  • “If one of you have a dollar, each of you have a dime.”  This has instilled in me the importance of family and has taught me to always be willing to encourage, uplift and  appreciate, celebrate one another and all that we bring to each others lives.

annie  This is my oldest sister Annie, not only was she oldest sibbling, she was also one of my care givers.    My most fondest memories of her was when she would take me for rides in a little red wagon pulling me and my two younger sisters along to the the nieghborhood clinic for our childhood vaccinations.  She would always promise to buy us a treat if we didn’t cry,  needless to say we did; but she still would always buy us ice cream.  She was one of the most loving, nuturing human beings, and I am so greatful for the 50 years we had together.

doris-and-brother This is me along with my brother Frank.  He is very important to be in many ways.  Frank is loving, caring and supportative.  He has always believe in me and encourages me to be my personal best.  Some of my most favorite memories are of when he was trying to teach me how to drive a 5-speed car.  He gave me a crash course by renting a car for the weekend and we spent all weekend practicing,  This made for a very long weekend for him; still he remainded patient and kept cheering me own.  Needless to say, I burned out the clutch system but he never gave up on me.

I still recall  him taking taking us to many of the school functions (ie) basketball, football and school dances.  I still smile every time I think about how he would allow me and younger sisters to earn an allowance by unpacking his car when he came home from college.

Favorite Quotes

These are two of my favorite quotes.

I get to experience this each and every time I walk into my classroom.

I have the distinct privilege of seeing my previous students as they walk down the school corridor on their way to class.  Many of them always stop in just to say hello, or just to reminisce about being their Head Start experience in my classroom.

One of my favorite children’s book is “The Giving Tree” by   Shel Silverstein.  What I loved most about this story now, that I didn’t realize as a child, is that no matter how much demands the little boy, placed upon the tree; the tree was always willing  and gave freely. This superb example of unconditional love can easily be compared to that of a parents  and and their children.
